How Age Affects Fertility Preservation Success Rates

Posted on May 22nd, 2025

Determining the best time to have children varies for each individual and couple. Some people feel ready in their twenties, while others want more time to focus on their careers or to find the right partner. Everyone's journey to parenthood is unique. However, one fact remains clear: fertility declines with age. Depending on your age and family-building goals, it may be worth preserving your fertility now to optimize your chances for children when you’re ready to have them.

Age and Fertility

Women are born with a finite number of eggs. These eggs gradually decrease until around age 32, when the decline accelerates. At age 37, egg numbers drop even more rapidly. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, women under 30 have about a 25% chance of getting pregnant naturally each cycle. That chance drops to 20% for women over 30 and just 5% by age 40.

A study by FertilityIQ found that women who stored 10 eggs after the age of 35 had a 30% success rate. In contrast, women under 35 who stored 10 eggs had a success rate that was double that. Additionally, for women under 35 who banked 20 eggs, their success rate increased to 80%. The younger you are and the more eggs you can bank, the better your chances of having a successful live birth later.

Fertility Preservation Considerations

How do you know if egg or embryo freezing is the right choice for you, your partner (if applicable), and your dreams for your future family? If you are of reproductive age and have recently been diagnosed with a condition that could negatively impact your fertility, such as cancer, it may be beneficial to freeze your eggs before starting treatment. If you are in good health and are considering freezing your eggs in your twenties or early thirties, it's crucial to consult a reproductive specialist. They can help you decide if egg freezing is the best option for you.
