Treatment

Medications and psychotherapy are effective for most individuals suffering from depression. Your primary care provider or psychiatrist can prescribe medications to relieve symptoms. However, many also benefit from visiting with a psychologist or mental health counselor to talk about your condition and related issues. Psychotherapy can help you:

  • Adjust to a current difficulty or crisis
  • Identify current negative beliefs and behaviors and replace them with healthy ones
  • Explore relationships and develop positive communications
  • Identify more effective ways to cope with stressors and problem solve
  • Identify issues that contribute to your depression and change behaviors that increase stress
  • Regain a sense of balance and control in your life
  • Identify realistic goals for your life
  • Develop the strength to tolerate stress and distress using healthy coping strategies

If you feel depressed, make an appointment to see your provider or a mental health professional as soon as possible.
