Dr. Amanda Skillern

Dr. Amanda Skillern is a native Texan with more than 12 years of experience in
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Working closely with our Lab
Director, she will plan and oversee the entire fertility process, maintain a
relationship with our patient’s OB/GYN, and carry out Aspire’s mission to create
a better fertility experience for each and every patient.

Dr. Skillern earned a Bachelor’s Degree with honors from the University of Texas
at Austin. This culminated in an honors thesis in health psychology in the area of
women’s sexual and reproductive health, solidifying her interest in this area. She
went on to earn her Medical Degree at Texas Tech, followed by a Residency in
Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and a
Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of
California, San Francisco. Dr. Skillern is Board Certified in both Obstetrics and
Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Skillern’s areas of interest include ovarian aging/ovarian reserve, and options
for extending fertility, such as oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing), embryo
cryopreservation (embryo banking) and oocyte donation. Her scientific research
has focused on the process by which primordial follicles (eggs) diminish over
time, to better understand how the ovary ages. This knowledge fuels her novel
clinical approach to women with diminished ovarian reserve.

With her background in women’s health psychology, she is also passionate
about the psychology and ethics of fertility. She has published in the area of
ethics and oocyte donation, and created the first and only tool addressing the
informed consent process for oocyte donors: the EDICT (Egg Donor Informed
Consent Tool). This work has also shaped a biopsychosocial approach to
patients that encompasses all aspects of the patient experience: biological,
psychological, and social.
