Dr. Mak earned her Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, as well as a Doctorate in
Genetics, from the University of London. She went on to complete her Residency
in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, England,
St. Mary’s Hospital in London, England, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los
Angeles. Dr. Mak completed her Residency in Reproductive, Endocrinology and
Infertility at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Dr. Mak’s primary interest is oocyte and early embryo biology, which is
instrumental in helping patients who experience recurrent pregnancy loss. At
Yale School of Medicine, she served as Assistant Professor in the Obstetrics,
Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences Department and Director of the
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Program. There, she focused on the full range of
reproductive endocrinology diseases including infertility, recurrent pregnancy
loss and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). She also conducted research in the
Yale Stem Cell Center (in the “Mak Lab”), investigating the use of stem cells for
placenta regeneration with the goal of developing new therapeutic strategies for
conditions ranging from recurrent pregnancy loss to preeclampsia, as well as
gaining a better understanding of role of the genes important in establishing
ovarian reserve in efforts to identify new biomarkers of oocyte and embryo quality.
Dr. Mak is widely published, has a joint appointment as Assistant Professor in
the Women’s Health Department at Dell Medical School, and has received the
Research Award from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. She
was also one of only a few physician-scientists appointed by the National
Institute of Health (NIH) as a prestigious Women’s Reproductive Health
Research (WRHR) scholar.
